The Lake

A (prominent) local author is publishing a fictional short story (novel or book) entitled, THE LAKE. He has offered to share some of the beginning chapters on HamletHub. One Story leads to the next story like a Detective mystery of puzzle, so keep up on the Stories and talk with your friends as you read and (analyze) just what THE LAKE means to you.

Chapter 1 - The Lake

Thought you might like to hear more about The Lake up here in The Time just in case you are ever in The Town and you want to check it out. I'd have to take you there since there are no maps to get you there and you wouldn't want to wander around The Bayou that surrounds it – The Bayou being a strange and isolated area and it is very easy to get
lost.

The Lake is an interesting Lake. At the entrance the width is only about fifty feet wide and the water is a translucent color. This is where a lot of the Senior Citizens hang out and you'll find them playing checkers and hop scotch and hide and seek. Some of them have hidden for good – never coming back. The far side of The Lake is much much wider probably stretching as far as Nebraska. The color of the water is a maize color and this is where The Farmers are that sell their corn and honey.

The water is much deeper there but not as deep as the center of The Lake.

On the left side of The Lake the water is pink and this is where The Marshmallow Bikini Teenage Girls hang out and spend the day sunning and tanning and at night giggling and flirting with the boys who naturally find this part of The Lake more scenic. There is limited parental supervision and most fun is restricted to G rated. There is a curfew but few care even though The Matron tells them to.

The opposite side of The Lake is an aqua color and this is where you'll find the younger kids. They spend a lot of their youth catching frogs and frogs over there are every where. Some days the kids catch two million frogs which of course they donate to The College of Astronomy and Biology and the next day there are two million more frogs hopping around.

Shore to shore it is remarkable how far one would have to swim. Most people only get half way across and have to turn back because they are too tired to continue. I can't think of one person that has ever swam more than half way across although some people claim that it is a distance of 400 yards and others 1000 miles. I guess a lot depends upon how far you are willing to go in life to find out what you are looking for. If that sounds familiar that's because it is one of the songs you might hear on Thursday nights when everyone goes to sit by The Lake on Music Night.

The center of The Lake is the scary part and it is a very opaque color. It is extremely deep there. Some people have been scuba diving out there and claim they have never seen the bottom. Legend has it, of course, that The Lake is actually endlessly deep and there are rumors of Pirate ships buried at the bottom with gold and silver. At various sequences of The Time others have mentioned the deepest depths of the water contain the Lost City of Atlantis, the third bullet, King Solomon's Mines, The Elephant's Grave Yard, a Lockheed 10E Electra, and the Golden Key to the Kingdom. This might envision the Bermuda Triangle but there are no triangles here. Just the typical mystery found in deep waters and in your Mind.

Of course in 1912 the good ship No Return did sink there during a freak storm and we all know that somewhere at the bottom is Fred's collection of mint Elvis Presley 45 records. Obviously more about Legends and Fred and Elvis to come. Especially about Legends since that is really the only thing many of us have to care about anymore.

You would think The Lake would be famous as other things in The Town – Uranium was discovered here and The Town still holds the record for tying the longest shoe string. But as I said it is not on a map or in a travel magazine so the notoriety of The Lake remains a local hot spot.

If you are interested I will share some more stories about The Lake. For now it's getting near time in The Time when I walk down to The Bayou and to The Lake and go for a swim. Tonight is Ice Cream Night and the first fifty people who show up get a free Popsicle – water taken and frozen from various sides of The Lake. My favorite flavor is pink and sometimes you get a few marshmallows mixed in.
