Happy Birthday to Redding's First Woman First Selectman!
Friends and colleagues, including Senator Richard Blumenthal, gathered together at New Pond Farm in Redding on January 27th to honor Mary Anne Guitar on her 90th birthday.
Many formal proclamations were made by state dignitaries in Mary Anne's honor. Senator Blumenthal surprised her with a visit on her special day, and thanked Mary Anne for being his both his friend and mentor, and for her lifelong service to others.
Mary Anne's contributions to the Redding community are legendary. She was Redding's First Selectman for 12 years, the first woman to ever hold that post. She helped found the Redding Land Trust and paved the way for other communities here and around the world in the effort to preserve open space for the benefit of future generations. Mary Anne was instrumental in the creation of New Pond Farm as a summer camp and educational center; and at 90 years of age, still serves her community as an active member of the Redding-Georgtown Democratic Town Committee and the League of Women Voters.
Mary Annes' service to her community runs long and runs deep. And wonderfully for us, continues into her 90th year.
