Danbury Concert Association opens 2024–2025 series with “pianist’s pianist” Cecile Licad

The Danbury Concert Association, a longtime mainstay of the area’s cultural landscape, will kick off its 2024–25 series of four concerts on Sunday, September 22 at 3 p.m., when pianist Cecile Licad returns to the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Western Connecticut State University campus.

The third DCA appearance by Ms. Licad—aptly called “the pianist’s pianist” by The New Yorker—will showcase her love of the poetic, in a program featuring Alexander Scriabin’s “Two Impromptus” (op. 12); Frédéric Chopin’s Preludes (op. 28); four selected rags by Scott Joplin; Franz Liszt’s “Legend” (St. Francis of Paola Walking on the Waves); and Maurice Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso.

A native of the Philippines, Cecile Licad first received international recognition as one of the youngest musicians to receive the prestigious Leventritt Gold Medal. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and with the fabled Rudolf Serkin, and has appeared with major orchestras and at music festivals worldwide.

Admission is free for ages 18 and under, courtesy of the Danbury Cultural Commission; inquire at the VPAC box office prior to curtain time.

All performances take place at the Visual and Performing Arts Center on the west side campus of WCSU, which offers in-the-round, open seating for up to 350. The series will continue with pianist Andrew Armstrong and violinist Abigél Králik on Sunday, October 20 at 3 p.m.; soprano Kathryn Lewek and tenor Zach Borichevsky—making their DCA debut—on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 3 p.m.; and the acclaimed Essex Septet on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 3 p.m.
