The Brewster Public Library Board of Trustees last week dedicated the main room of the library to David Bruen. Mr Bruen passed in February of 2014 and that time had been a Board member for over 25 years. In addition he was also Putnam County's first County Executive, serving two terms from 1978 to 1984 after having served as county treasurer for 18 years prior to that.

The ceremony was attended by almost 100 dignitaries, citizens and over a dozen of Mr Bruen's relatives. The current County Executive, Mary Ellen O'Dell and her predecessor, Paul Eldridge, attended and presented proclamations to the Library and the Bruen Family extoling Mr Bruen's lifelong dedication to the County and especially his passion for his hometown of Brewster.

Current Board Trustees Michael Conn and Peter Carey unveiled a memorial plaque and painting of Mr Bruen which will hang in the new David Bruen Reading Room. Mr Carey stated that the painting, plaque and room will "forever be a reminder to all of David's dedication to the library and his community" and that it will hopefully inspire others as well.

David Bruen Jr speaking on behalf of the family said "My father was a Great man and I'm sure he is looking down today from above with heartfelt thanks." He also thanked the Library Board for recognizing his father's commitment and dedication to the Library as the library meant so much to both his father and mother. Several other family members also echoed those sentiments and thanked the board and library staff for the honor.
