Top 10 Tips for the Morning of the SAT and ACT Test

The next SAT is on June 2nd and the next ACT on June 17th. The Morning of the SAT/ACT:  EA Test Prep’s Top 10 Tips

1. Wake one half hour earlier that you would actually need in case a problem occurs in the morning.

Why? You don’t want to feel rushed because that increases anxiety. Knowing that you have extra time in case unexpected events, which often happen, will make you feel more relaxed.

2. Dress in layers, so that temperature of the test room does not interfere with your performance.

Why? If you are physically uncomfortable because you are too hot or too cold, you will not be able to concentrate as effectively.

3.      Before leaving your home, check that you have the following items: your registration slip, photo identification, at least four sharpened pencils, erasers, and a calculator with newly replaced batteries.

Why? This will guarantee that you have all required items needed for the exam.

4.       Pack a high protein snack (protein bar or nuts) and water for your break during the SAT/ACT.

Why? A high protein snack and water will allow you to have the calories and hydration needed for the remainder to the exam.

5.       Do not wear a digital watch to the exam. If you want to wear a watch, wear an analog watch.

Why?  Digital devices are not permitted into the test room. If you were counting on looking at your watch and you need to leave it outside the test room, you will be upset.

6.     Have a parent drive you to the test site if you can. Hopefully, your parent will help you to feel calm. However, if you know that you parent will probably say things that will upset you, where headphones and listen to calm music. Let you parent know that EA Test Prep recommended that you do this.

Why? To avoid the responsibility of navigating any traffic and parking the car when you arrive.

7.   Arrive early to the test site, especially if you are not taking the exam at your high school. Walk though the halls and look at the classrooms, so that they look more familiar to you.

Why? People often feel uncomfortable in unfamiliar surroundings. By giving yourself time to settle in, you reduce any discomfort you feel.

8.  If you are going to a test site where you will see friends have a plan.   Either meet with friends and give each other pep-talks or avoid talking with others about the exam. If you decide to keep to yourself, let everyone know in advance that you want to just think about the test on that morning.

Why? One anxious person can make everyone else nervous.

9.During the time you are waiting for the exam to begin, review the EA Test Prep Strategies for each section of the ACT/SAT as a reminder that you possess new, proven test-taking skills for each type of question on this exam.

Why? Reminding yourself of the new skills you have will keep you calm.

10. Repeat your EA anxiety-reducing term(s) and remind yourself to use those word(s) each time you feel anxious during the exam.

Why?  By saying these words, you lower your anxiety, which reduces the stress hormone, cortisol, that is released in your body when you feel nervous. This hormone interferes with you ability to concentrate.
