The students of Pequenakonck Elementary School have been busy learning the important lesson that one person (or cub) can make a difference in the community. ONE CUB’s mission is to empower students with the knowledge that they can make a difference in our world through kindness, communication, citizenship, problem-solving, and celebrate the differences in us all.  It all starts with ONE CUB!

In December the students created holiday cards, crafts and letters for the residents of the Salem Hills Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Purdys. Fourth- and fifth-graders wrote and decorated cards and letters, while younger students created bookmarks, stationery, and snowflake and snowman ornaments.

That’s not all, Students, faculty, and staff had been saving water bottles since last January, and the money obtained from recycling them was used to buy gifts and craft supplies for the nursing center residents. Paraprofessionals spent hours purchasing and wrapping gifts and held a “gift prepping party” to assemble personalized bags containing cards and gifts for each resident. In addition, 33 blankets and throws were purchased to keep the seniors warm this winter.

In January, Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, Inc in Brewster was chosen as the charity they wanted to support. Between January and March, the students at PQ Elementary worked hard to collect 10,520 bottles and cans- totaling $526.00 which was donated to Pegasus in support of their Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies. The 5th-grade class will be visiting Pegasus this month to learn first hand how horses work with individuals with special needs and how their fundraising efforts will be used to support their incredible herd.

Determined to keep the community support going, Good Reason in North Salem was chosen as the charity to wrap up the school year. The children of PQ will continue to collect cans and bottles and the proceeds of the cans and bottles collected will be used to purchase Good Reason Dog Treats to be donated to the Putnam Humane Society. Good Reasons isn’t any old dog treat manufacturer, Good Reasons is a not for profit dog treat company on a mission. They create scrumptious, human-grade all natural dog treats while providing employment opportunities to people with autism and other developmental disabilities.
