Brewster Cares Puts Hope in Reach for Putnam County Homeless.

Brewster Cares, a new nonprofit, fills the gap left by the closing of

Putnam's only existing shelter this winter.

In the midst of one of the most challenging times in modern history, Brewster Cares, a new nonprofit is opening a shelter to protect some of our county's most vulnerable. After years of service, Putnam's only homeless shelter closed. In the midst of a global pandemic and on the brink of a cold winter, it was the belief of Father Richard Gill and other community leaders that we must never forget our most needy people.

"A society is judged by its concern for the most helpless and vulnerable members," Gill said. "We can't ignore the homeless and the poor living at the margins of our towns, and villages. Brewster Cares will offer a hot meal, a safe place to sleep and shelter from the cold during winter for our homeless brothers and sisters."

Brewster Cares is a 501(c)3 being supported by St. Lawrence O'Toole and Sacred Heart Parishes, as well as Trinity Lutheran Church. They are offering both overnight beds as well as a warming center from December 7 to the end of March at area churches and on North Main Street in the Village of Brewster.
