Greenwich HS Graduate Member of 2016 International Math Olympiad Winning Team

Recent Greenwich High School graduate Michael Kural (Class of 2016) is a member of the United States (US) Math Team that has, for the second year in a row, won first place in the 2016 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The US Team competed with high school students from more than one hundred countries around the world in early July at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad held in Hong Kong. Michael was also part of the U.S. Team that won the 2015 IMO, the first team from the United States in twenty-one years to achieve first place in the global competition.

Michael and his five teammates were immersed in problem-solving practice throughout June at the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA. The members of the winning U.S. Team were selected as part of a series of competitions sponsored by the MAA, culminating with the USA Mathematical Olympiad. Michael was a member of Greenwich High School’s Math Team since 2011-2012, joining as an eighth grade student. The GHS team won the Connecticut State Math League (CSML) Championships four of the five years that Michael was a member (2012, 2013, 2015, 2016). The GHS Math Team has won the CSML Championship for seven of the last eight years.
