Three questions with Yolanda Mahnke, founder of FlowKnowHow.

Why did you start your business?

I saw the need in companies big and small, hospitals, and academic labs for external experts in bioanalytical techniques. That is when I started my consulting business for flow cytometry, a measuring procedure that is widely used in basic, translational, and clinical research, as well as clinical diagnostics. It has been a very interesting and rewarding journey, with clients across the globe.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Acting as the Subject Matter Specialist of flow cytometry for clients who are working on bringing new medical therapies and treatments to patients.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

When I first started, I was mostly doing data analysis for clients. Since then, I have worked with software developers, instrument developers, biotech startups, and pharmaceutical companies on more strategic questions, and provided flow cytometry education to various entities. I feel like the scope of my service offerings evolves with each project, either because of something I learned on a particular job, or because a client requests something that I can provide due to my particular set of expertise, but hadn’t thought about offering previously.
