Danbury Music Centre offers Summer Programs for Strings, Bands and Afrikan Drumming

About the Program Directors and Conductors
Director of Bands: Albert Montecalvo has been Director of the Summer Band Program since 2002. He retired from the Carmel School District in 1998 as director of music K-12 and director of bands. He has performed as drummer/percussionist with many local orchestras, theater groups and big bands. He conducted the Danbury Symphony Orchestra in Charles Ives' Third Symphony in 2011 and its Grand Gala in 2012. He served as adjunct music professor at WCSU where he taught music education courses, conducted the Symphonic Band and supervised student teachers. He is director of the Western Connecticut Youth Wind Ensemble and has conducted Broadway Shows for Ridgefield High School since 2004.

Conductor of Concert and Preparatory Bands: Anthony Nunes was born and raised in Danbury and now resides in New Fairfield. He has been teaching private trumpet lessons since 1999 and has been teaching in the Norwalk Public Schools since 2011. He performs in various musical groups and is principal trumpet with the Danbury Symphony Orchestra. He recently completed a Master's Degree in Music Education from WCSU.

Director of Afrikan Drumming: Ase-AmenRa Kariamu of Kariamu Drum and Dance, began his drumming with master drummer, Brother Keindre O'Uhuru, director of the El Shabazz Orchestra in Harlem, NY. For the last ten years he has been teaching in the Juvenile Detention Center for CT Ballet in their "Out Reach" Program. Mr. Kariamu was "Mouse King" in several DMC Nutcrackers and has been a flutist for over 22 years. His instructors include Yamoussa Camara, master dancer/drummer of Guinea, West Afrika; and KoKayi, an Afrikan Dance Troupe of Mt. Vernon. Mr. Kariamu hosts West Afrikan Drum workshops throughout Connecticut, teaches at "A Common Ground," and has been director of the Afrikan Drumming Program since 2003.

Director of Strings: Larry Deming began his study of violin in the Music Centre's Summer String Program under John Burnett. He received a B.S. with Distinction from the Indiana University School of Music in 1981. He played violin in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for seven years and in the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and is first violinist of the Deming String Quartet. He has played with many musical luminaries; he arranges, composes, conducts, performs, and teaches many types of music. His CD, Journey to the East, was released in 2005. He is concertmaster
of the Danbury Symphony Orchestra and director of the Summer Strings Program since 2002.

Conductor of Beginner and Novice Strings: Alison Corigliano received a Bachelor of Music Cum Laude in violin performance from Western CT State University in 2001, studying with Eric Lewis of the Manhattan String Quartet. Mrs. Corigliano teaches privately in her home studio, as well as in the New Fairfield Public Schools. She performs with the Danbury Symphony Orchestra and is first violinist with the Ives Quartet. She has been an instructor for the Summer Strings program since 1999.

General Information: All rehearsals for all programs are at the Danbury Music Centre (unless otherwise indicated)

Registration: Accepted in person at the Danbury Music Centre during office hours, during the band placement evaluations, and through the mail.

Parents: If your child has any learning disabilities, please notify the Music Director(s) at the start of the program. It is the goal of the Danbury Music Centre to make the classes fun and to make each student feel good about his/her progress. You will help us do that by telling us of any special needs.

Discount: 10% discount for DMC members at the $150 or higher level. Final Registration at $150 is Monday, July 2. After July 2, tuition is $175. Refund Policy: Full refund prior to the start of the program.

Summer Band Classes

Bands
Tuition includes participation in as many bands as the student qualifies for.
Concert: Thursday, August 8, 7:30pm, at Broadview Middle School
Rehearsals: Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 9 – August 8 at Danbury Music Centre
Dress Rehearsal: Thursday, August 8, at Broadview Middle School, usual rehearsal times.

Attendance Policy for Summer Band Program
1. All registered students must be available to play in the concert.
2. Any student who will miss more than 4 rehearsals must have the approval of the director prior to being accepted into the program.
Band Placement Evaluation: Thursday, June 6 beginning at 6:00pm by appointment for the following students only: new in Symphonic Band; new
in Jazz Band; new in Concert Band if younger than entering

Jazz Ensemble 9:00 am – 10:15 am
The Jazz Ensemble will play arrangements from the big band era up to contemporary times. Improvisational skills and solo playing will be stressed.
The band will use standard big band instrumentation including trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano, guitar, bass, and drums.

Symphonic Band 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
The Symphonic Band plays advanced level, challenging music. Qualified musicians must be able to play major, minor, and chromatic scales from two to three octaves; must be able to execute different styles of phrasing and articulation; must have knowledge of complex time and key signatures; and have the ability to play syncopation. Most participants in this group will be in high school and beyond, or will have played at least four years. The band will play traditional band literature as well as popular favorites.

Concert Band 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm
This is an intermediate-level band intended for students who have studied their instrument for two or three years or who have the recommendation of their private or school music teacher. It is also for students who are proficient on a primary instrument wishing to pursue a secondary instrument.
Students must play several two-octave scales, understand compound time signatures, key signatures with at least two flats or sharps, and be familiar with repeat signs, dynamic and tempo markings. Most participants in this group will be entering grade 7 or higher. Other students may qualify by taking the Band Placement Evaluation (see above).

Preparatory Band 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Students in this band will be entering grade 5 or higher, have had at least one school year of instruction on their instruments and will be familiar with basic rhythm patterns, time signatures, key signatures and be able to play a one-octave scale. Most students in this band will be entering grade 5 or 6.
The band is also appropriate for older students with little band experience or for those who have just begun to learn a band instrument. Adults who have not played in many years are invited to join. Elementary level music will be played.

Summer Strings Classes
Strings
Tuition is $150 if received by July 2. After July 2, tuition is $175.
Tuition includes participation in as many string groups as the student qualifies for.
Concert: Friday, August 2, 7:30 p.m., at Broadview Middle School.
Rehearsals: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; July 8 -August 2, at DMC
Dress rehearsal: Friday, August 2, all students 10:00 a.m. – 12:00pm at Broadview Middle School.

Beginner Strings 9:00 am – 10:00 am, except on July 8 and 10, classes begin at 8:30am
This group is for children entering grade 3 and higher, and adults with no previous string playing experience. The class will provide students with group instruction to learn the basic skills necessary to play a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, and double bass). Parents are encouraged to observe the class. String Builder Book I will be used and may be purchased at local music stores.
Attendance in weeks 1 and 2 is mandatory for beginners.

Novice Strings 10:00 am – 11:00 am
This ensemble is designed for students who have been studying privately for less than one year or who have had a full year of instruction in school and for experienced string players switching from one string instrument to another – such as a violin player wanting to learn viola. The class will concentrate on the reinforcement of early skills. Music will be provided.

Tuning & lunch break 11:00am – 12:00pm
Intermediate Strings 12:00pm – 1:00 pm
This class is designed for students who have been playing for two or more years. Students must read music and be familiar with first position notes. Music, appropriate to the level of the group, will be provided.

Advanced Ensemble 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Participants must be able to shift into third position. This ensemble will study and perform standard string literature, and in the past has performed such works as Johann Strauss' Emperor Waltz, Ludwig van Beethoven's Ode to Joy, Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and others. Advanced ensemble playing techniques and sight-reading skills will be taught. Music will be provided.

Chamber Music Workshop 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm (begins on week 2)
The workshop will include the study and performance of string quartet literature and other types and styles of chamber music. Participants in the workshop will be selected from registered students by audition (date to be announced). All students (and their parents) registered in any of the string classes are invited to observe the workshop.

Summer Afrikan Drumming

West Afrikan Drumming (entering grade 3 – adults) $150

Concert: Thursday, August 15 at 7:00pm at CityCenter Green

Students will learn different styles and techniques of traditional West Afrikan drumming as well as the history and rich cultural traditions of West
Afrika. Discipline, teamwork, proper breathing techniques, body posture, and hand positioning will be taught. Drums will be provided (see below)
including the Sangbas, Dun-duns, Djembes, Kenkini, Drumsticks, and Shakaras. No experience is necessary. All ages (entering grade 3 – adults) are
welcome. Minimum enrollment is five students; maximum enrollment is 28 students.

There is a $30 additional fee to use a drum provided by Brother Ase. Students may provide their own drum with approval from the teacher. Usage
fees are payable directly to Ase-AmenRa Kariamu on the first day of class.
