Three Danbury students qualify for regional spelling bee

Three students from Danbury will head to the Western Connecticut Regional Spelling Championships next month to vie for a coveted spot at this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Fifth-grade student Aahil Nishad from Stadley Rough School, Anika Malayappan from Westside Middle School Academy, and Linda Saad from Broadview Middle School will all compete March 12 at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. Reigning champions Aahil and Anika are both former district champions and have previously competed in the national bee.

Stadley Rough fourth-grade teacher and spelling club organizer Marc Poliquin has worked with Aahil as a member of the club for the past three years. Aahil squared off against another seasoned speller at the school, Alexandra Illardi. Aahil’s winning word was “muishond.”

The Scripps bee will be held in Washington, DC, in May.
