Last night, a small group of supporters were immersed in an exclusive Sneak Peek of A.C.T. of CT’s highly anticipated JERSEY BOYS production, and it was nothing short of electrifying. From the first note, the cast of this jukebox musical pulled the audience into the heart of the 1960s, setting the tone for an evening filled with powerhouse performances and undeniable energy.
We walked into a working rehearsal just as the cast was belting out “Who Loves You,” setting the perfect vibe for the evening. The energy was electric as we also witnessed performances of “My Boyfriend’s Back” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry.” The best part? The audience became part of the rehearsal, providing a backbeat through hand claps and knee slaps. With music like that, it’s impossible not to get involved. You know these songs, you love them, and you’ll be singing along from the moment the curtain rises.
What makes this production of JERSEY BOYS special is not just the music, but the authentic storytelling that takes center stage. Artistic Director Daniel C. Levine shared how vital it is to capture the iconic sound of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. The production team is laser-focused on nailing those tight harmonies and distinct vocals that made this music legendary. Levine emphasized, “It’s really important that we capture that exact Frankie Valli sound. People expect to hear those unmistakable harmonies, and our cast, led by Gian Raffaele DiCostanzo as Frankie, is nailing it every day.”
Directed by Christopher Betts and choreographed by Emily Franch, this version of JERSEY BOYS offers a fresh take while staying true to its roots. Betts brings a unique approach to the show by removing the traditional bridge and relying on a turntable, allowing for smooth scene transitions across the show’s 75 different locations. This dynamic method ensures the storytelling flows seamlessly while maintaining an intimate feel, keeping the audience engaged and fully immersed in the experience.
Finding the right Frankie was no small feat. After auditioning over 100 hopefuls, they found their perfect match in Gian Raffaele DiCostanzo. He looks, sounds, and moves just like the real Frankie Valli, instantly transporting you back to the 1960s. DiCostanzo’s experience with the role makes him the perfect fit for this production.
The rehearsal also highlighted the incredible balance of the cast—a mix of seasoned JERSEY BOYS veterans and fresh faces. This blend of experience and new energy gives the production both a familiar feel and an exciting edge. Choreographer Emily Franch worked closely with the actors, combining their natural talents with period-appropriate movements that evoke the essence of the 1960s.
In this intimate theater setting, A.C.T. of CT’s JERSEY BOYS invites audiences to experience the rise, struggles, and successes of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in a way that feels personal and powerful. Winner of the 2006 Tony Award for Best Musical, JERSEY BOYS tells the story of four blue-collar boys from Jersey—Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi—whose harmonies rocked the radio and whose off-stage lives were just as dramatic. Hits like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” are as irresistible today as ever, and this production guarantees to bring those classics to life in a way that’s authentic and fresh.
