Anna Maria Galano, creator of Danbury's Bella Italia Restaurant, has died

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Anna Maria (Pignalosa) Galano, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, on January 2nd, 2025, at the age of 90. Anna died peacefully at Greenwich Hospital surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

Anna was born in Naples, Italy on November 22, 1934, the youngest of six children to the late Vincenzo Pignalosa and Assunta Vandelli. Anna lost her father Vincenzo when she was an infant; her family moved to Sorrento after the start of World War II.

It was in Sorrento that Anna met and married her late husband, Chef Agnello Galano, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage, raising their two children together.

Anna was a dedicated worker, beginning at a young age at the Hotel Miramare in Sorrento, and continuing a lifetime of service in the hospitality industry alongside her husband Agnello. Together they built the beloved Bella Italia Restaurant in Danbury, Connecticut, which was a cherished part of the community for nearly 40 years.  In retirement, Anna enjoyed traveling, dining and spending time with family and friends; she treasured her long friendship with Maria Zagottis and Lillian Tomanelli, and especially loved her daily walks with the family dogs, Diego and Giusi.

Anna was a devoted mother to her two children, Julia (Galano) Perillo and Lucio Galano. She was also a proud grandmother to her four grandchildren, Marco, Joanna, Nello and Paolo, and great-grandmother to Giuliana and Mattia. She is survived by her sons-in-law, Antonio Perillo and Louis M. Valantasis, and her grandson-in-law Timothy Sullivan and her grandaughter-in-law Gregoria Elizabeth Chaves-Perillo. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews in the USA and Italy along with many close friends.

Besides her parents and her husband, Anna was predeceased by her siblings, Maria, Nunzia, Antonio, Giuseppina and Matilde.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 10:30 AM in Saint Peter Church; 121 Main Street, Danbury. The family will receive friends at Saint Peter Church following the funeral mass. Interment will take place privately. Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, Danbury is in care of arrangements.
