Long Ridge Library Celebrates 106 Years of Community, Connection, and Literacy

Danbury, CT — June 2025 — This June marks a remarkable milestone for one of Danbury’s most enduring community treasures: the Long Ridge Library is celebrating its 106th anniversary. Since its founding in 1919, the Library has stood as a welcoming resource of knowledge, community, continuity and a gathering space for generations of local residents.
Located at 191 Long Ridge Road, the Long Ridge Library is a historic, independent, nonprofit public library that serves the greater Danbury area and surrounding towns. While the building may be small, its impact on the community has been anything but, with personalized service, rich programming, and deep roots in the community.
“For over a century, the Long Ridge Library has provided more than just books—we offer a sense of belonging,” says Barbara Fulton, Library Director. “Our patrons come in to borrow a novel, use the internet, attend a program, or simply sit in a quiet place. We’ve always been here for our neighbors, and we plan to keep it that way.”
Founded by a visionary group of women, the Library’s origin story reflects the resourcefulness and determination of its community. It began in a repurposed schoolhouse filled with donated books and , run by a dedicated group of volunteers who believed deeply in the importance of free access to information. Over the decades, it has grown into a welcoming public space where readers of all ages can explore new ideas, connect with others, and find a home away from home.
The Library now offers a variety of services including weeklychildren’s storytime, a Silent Book Club, a popular Chess Club, seasonal and cultural events, homebound book delivery for patrons who are unable to visit in person and an ever-evolving collection of books and resources.
The Library is sustained by grants, donations, and the generous time of volunteers. Every dollar donated and every hour volunteered helps maintain the welcoming spirit and operations that keep the Library thriving.
The 106th anniversary serves as a time to reflect on the Library’s legacy and to invite the community members to get involved - whether by becoming a patron, volunteering or spreading the word.
“We wouldn’t be here without our patrons, supporters, and volunteers,” Fulton adds. “Our history is your history. Whether you're new to the neighborhood or your family has lived here for generations, we welcome you to stop by, explore the shelves, or simply say hello.”
