Great Island Vision and Master Plan: Community Workshop #2

The Great Island Vision and Master Plan design team, led by Reed Hilderbrand, invites Darien residents to the second community engagement workshop on Saturday, November 16, 2024. This workshop will include two sessions, each free and open to the public.

Morning Session

Location: Darien Town Hall Auditorium

Time: 10:15 AM - 12:00 PM

This session features an in-depth presentation from the design team, covering findings from the first workshop, focus group meetings, and community survey responses. Residents are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and share input. No RSVP is required for the morning session.

Afternoon Session

Location: Great Island Stables

Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

In the afternoon, residents can participate in a guided site experience at Great Island Stables. A shuttle service will depart from Darien Town Hall at 1:00 PM, returning at 3:00 PM. Shuttle reservations are required; please email greatisland@darienct.gov to reserve a spot on a first-come, first-served basis. For those preferring other transportation, public parking is available at Pear Tree Point Beach with a scenic 20-minute walk to the stables. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Upon arrival, attendees will join one of three guided walks, led by the design team (reservations required), returning to the stables by 2:50 PM. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for a walk lasting 45-90 minutes. Selected buildings will be open as part of the architectural tour, and entry requires a signed waiver, available on-site. Self-guided mapped tours and field guide pamphlets will be available for those unable to secure a guided tour.

This workshop is part of an ongoing community outreach series, hosted by the Great Island Advisory Committee (GIAC) and the Master Plan Team, to gather public input on the future of Great Island. Engagement opportunities include workshops, focus groups, and online surveys. Following the morning session, a second survey will launch to gather further feedback.

This visioning process, conducted in collaboration with the Town of Darien and GIAC, is a year-long commitment to transforming Great Island’s 60-acre landscape into an ecologically sustainable public space, honoring Darien’s heritage and fostering community connections.
