Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Meet Erika Allen founder of Make-Modern

Why did you start your business?

My business partners and I saw an opportunity to be with local kids, in a creative and non-competitive space, that was happy AND built super skills while creating beautiful outcomes.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Crafting classes! K - 2 and 3 -5 grades take home gorg projects AND learn a new technique every week!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Yup. We source from some super providers we have found at The Sheep + Wool Festival (Rhinebeck, NY) and elsewhere like DashingFarms, Petit Felts, Sam Sidney, Cotton Clara and others!

Have you reimagined your small business?

Sure have! It hadn’t taken us long to realize that getting bigger lets local people do crafts with their communities —better crafts if we’re bigger — in easier and more fun ways!
