A group of concerned local parents calling themselves Fairfield Math Advocates is appealing to the Fairfield Board of Education and gathering petition signatures in support of remediation for 800 algebra students who they say used a deficient textbook during the past school year.

In an email distributed June 25 to fellow parents, the group stated it's case and outlined the harm they say was done through usage of an unapproved textbook. Here is the entirety of the email:

Support Remediation for 800 Algebra Students Who Used Deficient Textbook

We, as parents, are concerned about the potential negative impact to over 800 8th and 9th grade students who used the unapproved algebra textbook. Research has proven that algebra is a "gateway" subject that provides the foundation for geometry, trigonometry and calculus and, as such, the impact to students is serious and should not be discounted.

We, as parents, want all 2012 – 2013 Algebra 1 students to receive a national algebra test to assess readiness and to address the need for remedial assistance, if necessary. This test should be given within the first two weeks of the 2013- 2014 school year. Test results should be provided to parents and the overall test results, by grade and by school, made public.

We, as parents, want all remediation to take place during normal school hours of operation.

We, as parents, want tangible steps taken to assure that all policies regarding the adoption or piloting of textbooks, curriculums, learning methodologies, instructional material and instructional technologies are in keeping with standards of educational excellence and are followed by Central Office and the Fairfield Board of Education, in letter and spirit.

You can make a difference. The more signatures we receive, the greater likelihood that Dr. Title and the Fairfield Board of Education will agree to remediation or, in lieu of their agreement, the State Board of Education will impose remediation.
