FAIRFIELD, CT, November 17 - On Monday night at 11:33pm, the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a structure fire at 203 South Benson Road. The Fairfield Fire Department was immediately dispatched. The occupants were not home at the time of the fire.
Upon arrival, the first fire units reported heavy fire coming from the rear of the house. The entire back of the house along with over half of the interior was on fire. The fire department initiated an aggressive attack using multiple hand lines. Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood arrived at the same time as the first Engine Company and assumed command.
Units operating on scene searched the structure for occupants and determined that there was no one in the house. The homeowner arrived on the scene and reported that everyone was out of the house, and that they were not currently living at the house. All on duty Fairfield Fire Department resources were required to control this fire. Assistance was also requested to the scene from Westport Fire Department, Southport Volunteer Fire Department, AMR, Town of Fairfield Building Officials and UI. Bridgeport Fire Department and Stratfield Volunteer fire Department provided Mutual aide coverage for fire protection in the rest of the community.
The fire was placed under control at approximately 12:09 AM. Neighboring houses were monitored for levels of carbon monoxide. Fire Chief McCarthy and Deputy Chief Dunn were on scene providing command support. There were no reported injuries at the scene. The home suffered extensive damage. The Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an investigation.
