Wakeman Travel Program: A Winning Philosophy

Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse's Boys 7th-8th grade travel team just completed successful winter season,

Southport, CT - It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what made Wakeman Boys & Girls Club’s 6th-8th grade travel basketball unique this season – maybe it was a donation from Full Court Peace of new team sneakers for the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse girls team or a Southport team playing at halftime of a Fairfield University Women’s game – followed by a meet and greet with pizza.

Maybe it was the dedicated coaching staff, consisting of four Club Directors and six Club alumni. Parents also likely appreciated the consistent practice schedule and open communication from Travel Basketball Program Coordinator Glen Colello. There were also plenty of wins during the 22 game season – some teams won many games, while some won just a few.

“We had 7 of 22 games decided by 1 point, and we won 6 of them. This made for many close, spirited games leading up to our championship,” said Glen of the girls he co-coached with Southport Unit Director Clare Mahoney. Their team was one of three to reach a divisional championship game.

But as any well-respected coach knows, a great season in youth sports isn’t measured just by wins. It’s defined by individual skill development, team cohesiveness, respect for opponents and officials.

“I think our philosophy lies in our high-quality coaching staff,” said Southport Basketball Director Geoff Baranger. “They emphasize player development and attitude over strictly wins and losses. Glen does a great job of managing a cohesive approach. Players always knew when practices would be, which fosters high attendance and teamwork.”

The 7th grade boys team was coached by Club alumnus Ryan Leworthy, who along with many players, returned after winning just two games the previous year. Joined by fellow alum Adam Barlow, the team advanced to their championship game – a byproduct of the team’s focus on teamwork and fun. The Smilow-Burroughs boys team also found leadership in its coach, Senior Program Director and Club alumnus Ruben Goodwin.

Director of Development Kait Tremaglio - joined by husband Andy Tremaglio as co-coaches for Smilow-Burroughs’ team reflected, “While the games were tough and we didn’t have any wins, players were supportive of each other, excited to show up each day, and all showed great improvement…and most importantly, they proudly represented Wakeman as the first ever girls travel team at the Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse!”

While the season is longer, commitment greater and competition fiercer than the typical Club program, great pride is taken in adhering to the Wakeman way: skill improvement, making lasting new friendships and having a fun winter of basketball.

Tryouts for the 2019-20 season will be held in October, with details available in August.  Players are required by league rules to reside in the town their clubhouse is located. Team sponsorships are available.
