The American Red Cross needs volunteers to support blood drives in Connecticut. Volunteers at blood drives help with donor greeting and registration, as well as serving refreshments to blood donors. Anyone interested in helping may register at www.redcross.org/ct/volunteer.
"Volunteering is easy and helps support the collection of lifesaving blood by making donors feel welcome and comfortable," said Stephanie Boles, senior director of volunteer engagement with the Connecticut Chapter.
The Red Cross collects an average of 135,000 units of blood in Connecticut each year at approximately 3,000 blood drives. "We really need the help of volunteers to make sure we are able to staff drives and support a safe and adequate blood supply," Boles said.
No special skills are needed. The Red Cross will provide training. Basic qualifications include good communication skills, flexibility, a warm and friendly personality. "Staffing a blood drive is a great way to meet new people, keep up with members of your community and support the lifesaving work of the Red Cross," Boles said. "And we don't think you can meet a nicer group of people than Red Cross blood donors!"
Boles said blood drive volunteering is a great opportunity for individuals, or to volunteer with a partner or friend. Volunteer opportunities are available weekdays, weeknights and weekends. "We have drives to fit most any schedule," Boles said.
NOTE: Handling blood is not a volunteer responsibility. Phlebotomy is not a volunteer activity.
The American Red Cross workforce is more than 95% volunteer. Its work is accomplished through the donations of time, money and blood by generous individuals.
