Complete Streets Workshop and Training; What Is a Complete Street?
The Town of Bedford is pleased to host a Complete Streets workshop and training session starting with Coffee and Danish at 9:30 AM (Danish and Coffee) on Wednesday, January 13 in the courtroom of the Town House and followed by training from 10:00 AM through noon.
There is no charge and it is open to all Westchester County municipal employees, volunteers and interested parties. This inter-municipal training will provide an overview of the Complete Streets approach and will identify implementation steps and funding options that can help communities to build a healthy and sustainable transportation network. The training session is presented by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, and sponsored by Sustainable Westchester, Inc.
As described by the New York State Department of Transportation, "A Complete Street is a roadway planned and designed to consider the safe, convenient access and mobility of all roadway users of all ages and abilities. This includes pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation riders, and motorists; it includes children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Complete Street roadway design features include sidewalks, lane striping, bicycle lanes, paved shoulders suitable for use by bicyclists, signage, crosswalks, pedestrian control signals, bus pull-outs, curb cuts, raised crosswalks, ramps and traffic calming measures." Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed the Complete Streets Act in 2011, requiring state, county and local agencies to consider the convenience and mobility of all users when developing transportation projects that receive state and federal funding. NYS DOT is working to ensure that its policies and procedures meet the new standards. The initiative presents an opportunity to expand upon existing programs and collaborate with bicyclists, pedestrians, people with disabilities and others to identify best practices and designs for transportation facilities.
