The American Red Cross will honor Local Heroes at a breakfast in Trumbull on Friday, May 9. Honorees come from communities across southwestern Connecticut and from all walks of life.
The breakfast will be held at the Trumbull Marriott Hotel. Breakfast is served at 7:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. Tickets for the event are $40. Wells Fargo is presenting sponsor of the event.
"Our annual Heroes events never fail to inspire those who attend," said American Red Cross Connecticut and Rhode Island Region CEO Mario Bruno. "We honor everyday people who do extraordinary things. They symbolize the best in the human spirit and reflect the Red Cross ideal of helping others." Mr. Bruno said the honorees were nominated by the public over the last several months. "These are people who have made a difference – in some cases, a lifesaving difference – in their communities and are true heroes."
Bruno said the event is part of a series of three held in the state. "We honored heroes from central and northern Connecticut in Hartford in March. And we will heroes from Southeast Connecticut on May 30 in Groton. More information on all the events is available at www.redcross.org/ct/heroes."
Honorees at the Trumbull breakfast include:
A New Canaan teen who used quick thinking and skills she learned in safety training to help family members escape a fire.
A West Haven veteran who sustained grave injuries while in combat but was still able to alert reinforcements to the position of his unit.
A Wilton Police officer who put his life at risk to save an unconscious driver from a burning vehicle.
A Norwalk man who has organized blood drives for eight years and has helped to generate 150 gallons of lifesaving blood and blood products to-date.
A New Canaan Police officer who saved a choking four-month-old child.
A service dog that helps his teenaged companion from Madison live with Type 1 diabetes.
An order of nuns that have been the guiding force behind the community mission of St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for more than 100 years.
Three West Haven Police officers who saved a drowning victim in Long Island Sound.
Members of the Newtown Community, recognized for their coming together to support recovery in the wake of the Sandy Hook School shootings.

Mr. Bruno said the Heroes celebration would give the community an opportunity to recognize the good works of people in their communities and to celebrate the mission of the American Red Cross. "Nearly 96% of the American Red Cross workforce is volunteers. Those volunteers work every day to change lives and save lives. They are everyday people doing extraordinary things, just like the people we will honor on May 9."
