Amy Chatterjee Gives College Applicants Lots to Smile About

Stress. It’s one emotion that seems to go hand-in-hand with the college admissions process. The looming deadlines, confusion, and questions associated with college applications can throw the entire family into a state of chaos and crisis.

Westport resident and college counselor, Amy Chatterjee is changing all of that - one student at a time. With a mission to "change the culture of the college admissions process by making it stress-free for students and parents," Chatterjee strongly believes that the college application process can be fun (yes, she used the word fun) and parents shouldn't have to nag their kids about application deadlines.

Chatterjee is a college counselor with Collegewise. She is one of more than 35 counselors around the country who is committed to changing the culture of the college admissions process.

With humble beginnings, Collegewise was founded fifteen years ago by California resident, Kevin McMullin who worked with nine students in his apartment (at his kitchen table) to help them find the right colleges and complete their applications.

McMullin is the real-deal. And so are his counselors. “Kevin trained each one of us,” says Chatterjee.

McMullin grew Collegewise from grassroots and says that “word of mouth” enabled him to open office after office. McMullin admits that it was the success stories that got students and parents talking. “Families were thankful that we’d taken the stress out of the process and showed them exactly how to achieve their goals,” says McMullin.

“We hired counselors who kids liked and parents trusted. We turned our offices into a place where every family left feeling even better than they did when they arrived. We spoke at high schools, conferences, and community events, always preaching that our love for colleges wasn’t limited to the prestigious schools, and reminding families that great educations take place at lots of colleges, not just the famous ones,” explains McMullin.

“I love what I do, I feel called to this job,” says Chatterjee.
