Boys & Girls Village (BGV), a leading provider of behavioral health, education and permanency planning services for Connecticut’s at-risk youth and their families, recently held two academic award ceremonies to recognize student achievement.

The first ceremony recognized students completing the 2017/2018 school year at BGV’s Charles F. Hayden Upper School (grades 5 through 12), including members of the second-ever graduating class from the Hayden School. At the second ceremony, students from the Charles F. Hayden’s Lower School (grades K through 4), received certificates noting their progress and unique contributions to the classroom.

Addressing the Upper School students, Director of Education & Vocational Services, Jon Oddo said, “Each and every one of you worked extremely hard this year, learning new skills while challenging yourselves. I am often asked by Hayden School students ‘won’t you be sad when we’re gone?’ Of course, we will be, but we’re also happy to see you begin the next chapter of your life and to follow your success.”

Joseph Tramuta, a Boys & Girls Village board member, was the key note speaker at the Upper School ceremony and encouraged all students to persevere through personal adversity. Tramuta presented graduating senior, Katherine with her high school diploma as well as a full, four-year scholarship to the University of Bridgeport, from an anonymous BGV donor.

“Thank you to everyone here at BGV,” said Katherine during her speech. “I have spent the last three years growing into the person I have become, but I would not have been able to do so without their support and encouragement. I am so grateful for this opportunity and look forward to beginning my freshman year at the University of Bridgeport this fall.”

Katherine was also recognized for her outstanding achievements outside of the classroom. As a participant of BGV’s Charles F. Hayden School vocational program, she logged over 50 hours of skills development while working at several retail establishments, including Meatball Heaven, Design IQ & Print Shop, Do Me a Favor party supplies, and Chili’s – all while maintaining a 3.39 GPA.

“Our vocational programs allow our students and clients to use their classroom learning in a real-world setting,” said Dr. Kim Shaunesey, Chief Operating Officer of Boys & Girls Village. “It’s a valuable practice that helps students establish skills that can be used for years to come. We are heartened to know that Katherine will be armed with these skills as she continues her education and works towards her future career in industrial design.”

Speaking of the Lower School students, Dr. Shaunesey noted, “We encourage our younger students and clients to begin preparing for their futures, although it may seem far away. It is never too soon to begin building the personal skills that will serve us over a lifetime of challenges and achievements.”
