Self Defense Course at Grace Farms

The New Canaan Police Department in collaboration with Grace Farms Foundation will offer a FREE five-week course to inform women and girls on how to protect themselves and reduce their chances of becoming victims of assault and/or domestic violence. This class will address the prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses and the impact drugs and alcohol can have on student behavior. Instruction will include prevention strategies and self-defense demonstrations.
Registration is required for the five week course. Dates include:
January 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, and 28
February 2, 4, 9, and 11
Taught by certified instructors, the course is offered at two separate times and will meet twice a week for five weeks. Each class lasts an hour and a half—6:00 to 7:30 pm or 7:45 to 9:15pm —at Grace Farms, 365 Lukes Wood Road, New Canaan, CT.

Officer David Rivera is teaching the course, alongside Fred Pickering former Lieutenant of the New Canaan Police Department and Assistant Director of Safety at Grace Farms Foundation. Rivera says: "This program opens up the door for parents to have this most important conversation with their children. Sexual assault and domestic violence are crimes that touch everyone’s life.” Pickering adds: “Having this course is our way of combatting these crimes and educating the community.”
Grace Farms Foundation is a private operating foundation with 501c3 status, established in New Ca- naan, Connecticut in 2009 to support initiatives in the areas of the arts, justice, community and faith. Supported by individual gifts and (in the future) program revenues, the Foundation carries out its work principally through the facilities and programs of Grace Farms, an 80-acre property that the Founda- tion owns, has developed and is managing for the benefit of New Canaan, the local nondenominational Grace Community Church and the greater community.
