Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT The Glass House!

Four questions with Christa Carr, Communications Director at The Glass House.

Why did you start your business?

The Glass House, the former home of architect Philip Johnson and his partner David Whitney, opened as a museum in 2007 and is a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Finish this sentence in regard to your business. "I wish I could…"

We wish we could invite all of our community to enjoy the 49-acre site that comprises bucolic landscape, architecture, art, and design- an inspiring place to stroll minus the crowds.

What is your best selling product/service?

The Glass House tours sell the best as visitors want to experience the site. We also sell a lot of Glass House Snow Globes in the Design Store!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Every year we hold our annual fundraising event, the Summer Party that is crucial to raising important funds towards preservation of the site-–thanks to Southend restaurant for our festive picnic fare, Earth Garden for flowers and plants, Elm Street restaurant, Green & Tonic, Heather Gaudio Gallery, Rockwell Art & Framing, in Darien- NEAT coffee Darien Cheese & Fine Foods, in Wilton- The Schoolhouse at Conondale. Along with this, we have programming supported by our local community- the New Canaan Library and New Canaan Community Foundation for support of our Glass House Presents program.

We are grateful for the wonderful community of cultural sites (Grace Farms, New Canaan Historical Society + Museum, Carriage Barn Art Center, New Canaan Pollinator Pathway organization, and more) who help raise awareness of our important mission to preserve the site and share in our events and experiences. We are so grateful for New Canaan businesses who recommend friends, family and visitors to take a tour of the site and of course the dynamic team supporting the Glass House throughout the year at the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce and TEDAC. We also need to thank local press – New Canaan Magazine, New Canaanite, New Canaan Advertiser, New Canaan Patch and HamletHub for all their support.

The Glass House is located at 199 Elm Street in New Canaan. Visit The Glass House online here.
