NF Police Use License Plate Readers to Scan Passing Vehicles

The New Fairfield Police Department has obtained one high- speed license plate scanner capable of reading and photographing the plates of passing vehicles. The scanner, which uses high -speed cameras and a laptop, is one of the latest technologies available to officers and was purchased in 2011 with a federal grant from Homeland Security.
The purpose of the scanner is to determine when a car is not properly registered or even stolen. The tool not only scans the license plate, sending the number in to be processed, but also photographs to vehicle in a process which officers claim in non-invasive.
If the results that are returned to the officer are questionable, the vehicle will be stopped. To ensure that you are driving a vehicle that is properly registered visit the DMV registration information services at:

While registration stickers are not required any longer, a copy of the updated registration verification must be kept in the vehicle at all times.
