Memoir and Personal Essay Writers Workshop at Newtown Adult Education on March 23

The Candlewood Writers Workshop in Danbury, led by Priscilla Whitley, will facilitate a Memoir and Personal Essay Writing Workshop, in collaboration with Newtown Adult Education, beginning Wednesday, March 23 and continuing for six weeks.

So many have been inspired to record the transforming events of their life either in memoir form or in a short personal essay. But where to begin? By using storytelling skills, we will explore the various ways to turn personal stories into compelling reading, incorporating dialogue, description, setting and theme. Discussion will center on published stories and craft essays by authors who have illustrated their mastery of memoir and how to apply these lessons to our own work. Participants will share their own writing with comments and observations from the class in a supportive, safe environment. The workshop is for those beginning to venture into writing as well as others already working on a piece.

Priscilla Whitley attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism as well as Fordham University and has worked at Simon and Schuster Publishing. Her essays have appeared in numerous publications including Weston Magazine Group, Brain Child Magazine Blog, Chicken Soup for the Soul, Scary Mommy as well as placing first in The Westport Arts Center Memoir Contest. She is a feature writer for The Record-Review in Westchester County as well as the founder and facilitator of The Candlewood Writers Workshop which has been in existence for 11 years. priscillawhitley.wordpress.com
