Newtown's New Municipal Animal Shelter is Showing Signs of Life

With the walls up and the radiant- heat flooring pipes installed, the new Newtown Municipal Shelter on Old Farm Road off Trades Lane is finally showing signs of life.

At the Board of Selectman meeting on December 7, 2011, First Selectman Pat  Llodra stated that she expects the Pound to be ready in the spring, “All underground work is done and will be completely closed in by the end of January.”

According to Public Works Director and Project Manager, Fred Hurley, the two major storms that hit our area this fall pushed the original completion date of February  2012 to late spring, but “other than that everything is going according to plan.”

Still pending is the fate of a new cat ordinance permitting the new Shelter to pick up, accept and house cats.   Several versions of the ordinance were discussed at Council meetings over the last few months with no resolution.

The newly elected Council members now have the responsibility to write, revise or vote on the resolution as written by the previous Ordinance Committee. That version has a euthanasia component for cats, as well as component addressing feral cats in Newtown .

Once the Cat Ordinance is voted by the entire Legislative Council it will be presented at a public hearing.

A written euthanasia policy for the dogs at the Municipal Shelter is also being considered in place of the verbal “no kill” policy that has been in place since it was instituted by the Rosenthal administration more than ten years ago.
