Silvermine Arts Center presents a new exhibit of works by Guild Artist members, curated by Suzanne Julig, of Suzanne Julig Art Advisory, a private art advisor based in New York City.  “In the Layers,” opening on November 3 features artwork selected by Ms. Julig. The opening reception is on Sunday, November 3 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.  The exhibition will run through December 23.

“In the Layers,” inspired by the Stanley Kunitz poem, “The Layers,” is a group exhibition featuring works on paper extensively layered in both thematic and stylistic ways. The selected multi-media, collage, painted and sculptural works are both visual and expressive, suggesting themes of the poem. The poem reflects upon the layers you go through in life and the things you must leave behind.  Realizing that life is all about the changes and adjusting to them, pushing through the layers and not looking back at what is left behind, but looking forward towards what is to come. About her idea for the exhibition, Ms. Julig states, “I was particularly taken by the Silvermine artists’ mixed-media, collage and sculptural works that express emotional complexity, memory, longing and mystery, as well as evoking visual interest in the use of layered materials.”

Guild Artists featured in this group exhibition include:  Thomas Anastasio (Palm Coast, FL), Nina Bentley (Westport, CT); Suzanne Benton (Ridgefield, CT), Tom Bernsten (Norwalk, CT), Helen Cantrell (Old Lyme, CT), Ann Chernow (Westport, CT), Bruce Dunbar (Stratford, CT), Jeanine Esposito (Westport, CT). Suzanne Julig has spent over 25 years in the art field and began her career at the IBM Gallery of Science and Art, first as a lecturer and educator, and then in the areas of exhibitions and communications.  As a Director at Hirschl & Adler Galleries, DC Moore Gallery, and Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts, she specialized in 19th and 20th century American and European paintings, works on paper and sculpture, as well as contemporary art.  Suzanne has placed works with major private, museum and corporate collections, in addition to organizing exhibitions and lecturing on a variety of art-related topics.
