When Helen Kovacs, owner and director of Creative Children's Korner Preschool (CCK), and Nancy Biracree, founder of the All For Twos program, first met at a business function years ago, they knew little about each other. But the two soon learned they shared a "hands-on" teaching philosophy and a dedication to helping very young children grow in a safe and loving environment.
Now the educators are bringing their complementary early childhood programs together in one location, at CCK's expanded space within the First Congregational Church of Ridgefield.
All For Twos, which has operated in Ridgefield since 1986, is designed as a "first school" for children ages 18 months to three years. The children are grouped into classes based on their birthday and attend with their mom, dad, grandparent or other special grown-up for one hour and fifteen minutes each week. During this time, they play with an array of developmental toys, create art projects, have circle time, and, of course, enjoy a snack. These weekly sessions provide an important opportunity for little ones to socialize and make friends, all within the security of having their caretaker with them. It also gives parents a chance to make new friends, too.
CCK, founded in Ridgefield in 1967, is a traditional preschool for children ages three to five. Students are dropped off for class three or more days per week, depending on age, which allows them to begin the process of separating from their parents. Teachers follow a curriculum designed by Ms. Kovacs that progresses with each age group, helping to prepare youngsters for kindergarten while they play and create.
"It's a natural fit that we should share a space," said Ms. Kovacs. "As the children reach age three, they can easily transition into the CCK preschool program in the same happy 'school' environment they experienced with their mother or caregiver while in the All For Twos program."
"I am excited to continue my program in this beautiful, sunny space! It's so convenient for parents to park and walk Main Street before or after class," said Ms. Biracree of the church's location at the corner of Routes 33 and 35, near the landmark Cass Gilbert fountain.
Nancy Biracree, founder of All For Twos, is a former Broadway entertainer and a published author as well as an educator. She has been bringing joy to local children through her program for 27 years.
