Bald Eagle Viewing at the Shepaug Eagle Observation Site

The Discovery Center at Ridgefield is offering an opportunity to view bald eagles as they gather near the Shepaug Dam for winter feeding on Saturday, February 15, at 9 a.m. at the Shepaug Eagle Observation Area in Southbury.

During the winter months bald eagles gather near the Shepaug Dam on the Housatonic River in Southbury. This area appeals to the wintering birds because the hydroelectric station's operation prevents water from freezing making it easy for the birds to feed on their favorite food, fish. Since the Shepaug Eagle Observation Area opened in 1986, 139,800 visitors have been able to observe these majestic birds. The 2013 viewing season averaged 6 bald eagle sighting per day with 3,100 visitors taking advantage of this opportunity.

This program is great for adults and/or children and is very popular. Because of the limited space, reservations are a must.  This program is free to members, $7 for non-members. Please dress for the outdoors and, if possible, bring binoculars.

The group will meet at Farmingville Elementary School (325 Farmingville Road, Ridgefield) at 9 a.m. Guests will be given printed directions and the group entry code for access into the observation area. If you cannot meet at this location or if you have any questions, please contact The Discovery Center.
