NeighborhoodScout names Ridgefield 2016 Safest City in the U.S.

NeighborhoodScout Releases its Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. for 2016

NeighborhoodScout writes of Ridgefield:

Ridgefield home prices are not only among the most expensive in Connecticut, but Ridgefield real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Ridgefield is a decidedly white-collar town, with fully 92.29% of the workforce employed in white-collar jobs, well above the national average. Overall, Ridgefield is a town of managers, professionals and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Ridgefield who work in management occupations (19.01%), sales jobs (13.82%) and business and financial occupations (13.61%).

Of important note, Ridgefield is also a town of artists. Ridgefield has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Ridgefield’s character.

Also of interest is that Ridgefield has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 9.89% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes. read more HERE.

NeighborhoodScout, a nationwide neighborhood search engine and provider of location based analytics for real-estate investors, mortgage professionals and homebuyers, has just released its 5th annual top 100 safest U.S. cities list for 2016. Topping the list of the Safest City is Ridgefield, Connecticut with a crime index of 97 out of a possible 100. Other Connecticut towns making the list:

  • Greenwich - #29
  • Cheshire - #33
  • Glastonbury - #39
  • Shelton - #57

When ranking the country’s 100 safest cities a different type of urban satellite tends to appear on this list: the bedroom community just miles outside of the major city.

NeighborhoodScout was able to compile this top 100 list by comparing the safety of cities (of different sizes) across the country by factoring in population — giving a rate for individual types of crime per one thousand residents. Types of crimes taken into consideration for this list include violent and property crimes, including the seven major types of crimes tracked by the FBI: burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault.

In order to account for as many crimes as possible, NeighborhoodScout factors in data from all 18,000 local law enforcement agencies across the U.S. Many cities are served by more than one agency (municipal police, county sheriff, transit police, etc.). By using this method, NeighborhoodScout is uniquely able to provide the only holistic representation of total crime known to occur within a city or town - not just those reported by a single agency.

In NeighborhoodScout’s previous research report it announced its findings on the top 100 most dangerous cities, which tended to be a combination of medium to large sized cities with struggling economies, and industrial, often impoverished satellites of large cities. Many were found in the American heartland, a pattern that disrupts long held perceptions that the most dangerous places are the large coastal cities.
