Alan Ibbotson is Helping Ridgefield Celebrate Diversity & Inclusion

When Alan Ibbotson move to town, Ridgefielders didn’t care that he was different. They welcomed and accepted him with open arms. “It has been amazing to be completely accepted without question,” he says. “I’m gay, I’m married to Steve and we have adopted two Puerto Rican children,” says Ibbotson, adding, “I’ve had experience of being out there in the community and being different.”
Ibbotson wants to celebrate Ridgefield and the residents who live here. “We are the people of Ridgefield here to say welcome, no matter where you are from, what religion you practice, who you love, or what language you speak,” says Ibbotson.
Ibbotson has created custom-made lawn signs that read, No matter where you are from, we love you as our neighbor. “I want to give them [Ridgefielders] the opportunity to wear their inclusivity with pride.”
The message on the sign is displayed in three languages. “I saw versions of the sign, but without the Statue of Liberty and not specific to a town so I created my own version, and made it about Ridgefield,” explains Ibbotson.
A large version of the sign is prominently displayed in front of 325 Main Street, ideal visibility for people coming into or leaving town. “Main Street resident Siobhan Fisher offered to display a larger version of the sign. She said I want to support this.”
Ibbotson ordered 50 lawn signs, all of which have been purchased. But, if you want one, don’t fret. He says, “The second batch is on the way.” A $5 donation covers the cost of the sign and any donations beyond that will be given International Rescue Committee (IRC).
Enhancing the mission and motto stated on the sign, Ibbotson created a Welcome to Ridgefield Facebook Page and encourages those interested in purchasing a sign to follow the page for updates about sign availability and where they can be picked up.
The Facebook Page reads, This is the page for those of us would like to welcome people to town regardless of their religion, age, race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or nationality. This is a safe zone to offer welcoming messages and encouragement, resources, services and support to those who could especially use it! Post your welcome messages! Pics of your lawn signs! Offer help! Ask for help! Love, acceptance and compassion are the driving values behind this page. Welcome to Ridgefield!
“We are so much more alike than we are different,” says Ibbotson.
