Grade eight students at Saint Mary School (SMS) will be the first graduating class to complete a Capstone Project.
“The Grade 8 Capstone Project is a new initiative this year,” explains SMS Director of Advancement, Amy Dowding. As the culmination of the students’ learning experience at SMS, this project may be the most memorable of their assignments. “This project offers them (the students) not just self-directed learning, but hands-on experiences”, says Dowding.
Under the direction and guidance of Mrs. Elizabeth Manno, Assistant Principal, 8th grade homeroom teacher, and middle school Spanish teacher, and Ms. Jennifer Kasinskas, middle school English Language Arts teacher, students have met weekly since September. This inquiry-based year- long project allows each student to choose their own individual topic and means of exploring that topic. The Capstone experience is designed to encourage students to uncover their inner passions, curiosities, and ideologies.
“As we began to create this program, we kept in mind the knowledge that when students care about a topic, goal or assignment, they are more invested in their learning. They are more willing to take risks and persevere. Research has shown that one of the most important predictors of student success is not solely based on their academic grades and ability, but this ability to persevere in the face of challenges”, says Manno.
“We want to prepare students to succeed in high school, college, and ultimately as members of the global community. This initiative is an important step in this process," says Dowding.
Several weeks ago, each student had to present their project proposal to members of the Capstone Advisory Board for feedback and final approval. The board was composed of local educators and professionals, which included former SMS faculty, SMS School Advisory Board members, parents of alumni, and college-aged SMS alumni.
By the end of the school year, students will present their completed Capstone Projects to the SMS community at large.
