Keeler Tavern Museum and History Center Receives Grant for Collections

Keeler Tavern Museum and History Center (KTMHC) has secured a Collections Assessment for Preservation (CAP) grant to hire two assessors with museum-specific expertise to help review its plans for managing all its collections—buildings included. “Our objects, documents and even our buildings—including the ones we acquired in 2016 at 152 Main Street—comprise our collections,” says board president Hilary Micalizzi. “This grant, awarded to us on behalf of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a Federal agency, acknowledges the significance of our site and its historic assets.”
The CAP program is administered for the Institute of Museum and Library Services by the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation (FAIC). Competition for these grants can be stiff. “We received an outstanding pool of applicants this year, with a 60% increase from last year,” says Tiffani Emig, FAIC’s Programs Director & Administrative Manager. “Our applicants represented museums from around the country, all with unique missions, goals, and challenges.”
The CAP program includes an orientation for curatorial staff and volunteers, several days of on-site consultation with the museum assessors, and final reports that will inform future plans for all collections. “Participating in the CAP program is just one of the ways we’re making sure that KTMHC’s expanded campus will fulfill its promise for 21st-century visitors looking to learn from the past,” says Executive Director Hildi Grob. “We’re thrilled to have been selected.”
Keeler Tavern Museum and History Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is located at 132 Main Street in Ridgefield, CT. The Museum presents three centuries of the region’s history through the lives of the families that occupied the site starting in 1713. It offers docent-led tours of its period-furnished tavern building on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
