Services planned for Ridgefield resident Alicia J. Snakard, 80

Alicia J. Snakard, 80, of Ridgefield, CT passed away Monday, June 25, 2018 surrounded by her family.  Alicia loved her family, her faith and her profession.  She cared deeply for her loved ones and selflessly gave of her time and talents to so many.

Born in New York City, NY, to William and Mary (Wudyka) Medlow on December 24, 1937, she attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn, NY.   She was attending St. John's University and working for American Airlines when she met the love of her life, her husband, John W. Snakard, Jr.   They married September 8, 1962.

During their lives together they raised seven children and lived in several places: Queens, New York, Paramus, NJ, and St. Louis, MO before settling in Ridgefield, CT, where they lived for 50 years.  Alicia took pride in her children, always wanting the best for them and their families.  While encouraging them to be strong and independent she always reminded them to care for others. She loved to travel to visit her children and grandchildren and vacation in Kauai and Maui, her favorite vacation places, which the family shared with her many times.

Once her seven children were in school, Alicia went back to college at Western Connecticut State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1982.  She worked as an accountant for many years at Norco in Branchville, CT and US Surgical in Norwalk, CT.  She obtained her CPA license in 1991 and worked in Public Accounting for John Prichard, PC.  Since the mid-1990’s Alicia practiced on her own as a CPA, “Alicia J. Snakard, CPA”, where she specialized in personal income tax. Alicia loved helping people with estate and other tax planning strategies. She maintained her practice until 2015, when family commitments called her to retire.

In addition to her family and her profession, her faith was also incredibly important to Alicia.  She was a devout Catholic. For many years she spent countless hours at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Mary Church in Ridgefield, which her husband John helped to establish over 20 years ago.  She also regularly brought the Eucharist to the homebound for many years.

She was predeceased by her parents William and Mary Medlow, and grandson Michael A. Snakard.  Surviving her are her loving husband of nearly 56 years, John W. Snakard Jr., her seven children: four daughters; Catherine (Timothy) Bergin of Manhattan Beach, CA, Ellen (Patrick) O’Connor of Fayetteville, NY, Carolyn Snakard of Norwalk, CT, and Eileen Snakard of Washington, DC;  and three sons; Michael (Spencer) Snakard of Gainesville, VA, Kevin (Kristene) Snakard of Collegeville, PA, and James (Elizabeth) Snakard of Parker, CO; her 16 grandchildren; Leah Corachea, Connor and Hannah Bergin, Christopher and Patrick O’Connor, Robert, Gregory and Angela Snakard Morgan and Alexandra Sossa, Alison and Olivia Snakard, Caydence Snakard and Jack, Wyatt and Luke Snakard;  her sister Arline Jakuc, brother William (Jai) Medlow and several nieces and nephews.  The family greatly appreciates the efforts of caregiver Purity Ncane-Hamilton who took such loving care of her in their home.

Friends will be received on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 9:30 AM at St. Mary Church; 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield.  Interment will follow at 12:30 PM in Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, Long Island, NY.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Mary Parish Adoration Chapel in memory of Alicia J.
