This past Mother’s Day, Ridgefield resident Amy Sonderman made an interesting discovery in her Twix Hills backyard - one that has since captured her attention and pulled at her heartstrings. She saw what appeared to be a family of foxes taking residence on her property.

Affectionately naming one cub Ace and the other Trixie, Sonderman says, "They live with their mom under the shed. They look much different from each other and have different personalities."

Over the next month, Sonderman and her children watched the wild animals and Sonderman managed to snap the photos you see here from her window, even capturing a photo of mother fox nursing one of her babies.

These foxes are part of the red fox (Vulpes Vulpes) species and abundant in Connecticut. According to the Connecticut DEEP, the red fox is an omnivore, meaning that it eats both plant and animal foods including small rodents, squirrels (shown in photo #1) woodchucks, rabbits, birds and eggs, amphibians, and reptiles. They frequently inhabit yards, parks, and golf courses, especially areas that adjoin suitable, undeveloped habitat.

The DEEP warns residents who see foxes in their yard to keep cats indoors, particularly at night, and small dogs on a leash and under close supervision at all times. Thankfully, the Sonderman family does not have any house pets.
