Saint Mary School Grade 2 Teacher Brenda Chapman Brings Math To Life With Llamas

Saint Mary School Grade 2 teacher Brenda Chapman and her students are crazy about llamas, in fact, their theme for the year is "llamazing"!  They combined their love of llamas with a hands-on math lesson with great results.

"Working with money and the associated math concepts is hard as children don't handle money as frequently as they did in the past", recognized Mrs. Chapman.  So she oversaw an apple sale.  The students created signs and decorated bags for their customers.  They invited parents and siblings, who were asked NOT to provide exact change.  They practiced with Grade 5 friends prior to the event and felt like experienced cashiers by the time the real event took place.  "It was fun making the change in real life", said Gianna, one of the students. "Granny Smith was our best-seller."

So where do the llamas come in?  The class set a goal of raising $100 from the sale to sponsor a llama at Green Chimneys, which provides animal-assisted therapy and educational activities for children with special needs.  They exceeded that, raising a grand total of $208.47, and were able to sponsor a dog as well!  They hope to take a field trip later in the year when restrictions are lifted.
