Maritime Rowing Club Wins Gold Medals at Head of the Charles Regatta

Ridgefield HS senior, Jax Mantione, rowed to a gold medal finish at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA on Sunday, October 24th.

Jax rows with Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk, CT. The club is open to students of all local high schools. Jax partnered with Zoe Meuer from Fairfield Ludlowe HS in the Youth Women’s Double taking the gold medal in a field of 54 boats. 

The Head of the Charles is the largest and most prestigious regatta in the world. Its reputation derives from the complicated and storied 5k course that passes under six bridges as it winds along Boston’s Charles River. 

Jax and Zoe are the first Youth Women’s Double to win a gold medal for the Maritime Rowing Club in team history.

  • Men’s Youth Coxed 4x: Ian Holly (Darien), Lachlan McLaren (Darien), Kevin Crotty (Fairfield), Justin Sun (Weston), and Ashlyn Villafranca (Norwalk)

  • Men’s U17 Coxed 4x: Rowan Salemi (Pound Ridge), Logan Thom (New Canaan), Owen Hunter  (New Canaan), Frederik Asker (New Canaan), Finn Converse (Westport)

 

Also on the podium for Maritime:

  • Women’s U17 Coxed 4x (3rd Place): Reagan Thom (New Canaan), Paulina Almy (Darien), Ava Gaudio (Wilton), Madelyn Cummings (Norwalk), Gabriella O’Meara (Wilton)

  • Women’s Youth Coxed 4x (4th Place): Josephine Williams (Darien), Jillian O’Meara (Fairfield), Ava Tucci (Darien), Holly Prichard (Ridgefield) and Arianna Ording (Ridgefield) 

  • Men’s Youth 8+ (13th Place): Ethan Xia (New Canaan), Mac Busby (New Canaan), Cort McNichol (New Canaan), Max Savona (Norwalk), James Gill (Monroe), Christopher Cimador (Fairfield), Pace Flaherty (Darien), Gustav Neubohn (New Canaan) and Claire Fullington (Darien)

Seeing both our older and younger athletes succeed shows how strong our foundation is here at the club” said Sharon Kriz, MRC Director of Rowing and Boys Head Coach. “Our girls showed a lot of strength and courage. I’m excited to see what these girls can do both this year and in the years to come” said Yulia Chagina, Girls Head Coach.


The Maritime Rowing Club trains on the historic Norwalk River.  The team is composed of rowers from over 20 local schools and has a strong reputation of sending athletes to top level collegiate programs as well as US National Teams. Maritime Rowing Club is a team-oriented organization where all members work together to provide an enjoyable rowing experience in both sweep and sculling boats.. Since 1996, rowing classes have been offered for all ages and skill levels, from Middle School Learn-to-Row to Masters competitive racing. Programs are offered year round.
