FCIAC — What?

Cover Image for FCIAC — What?

If you’ve live in Ridgefield, or Fairfield County, and follow any of the local high school sports teams, by now, you’ve seen the acronym FCIAC.

FCIAC, or the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference, was established in 1961 and is the athletic conference for many high schools throughout Fairfield County.  Ridgefield High School is part of that conference, and its teams play most of their games against other conference teams.  There are many, long-standing rivalries, and winning an FCIAC Championship can be allusive, and yet as meaningful, as a State Championship.

The FCIAC hosts more than 100 combined championship/ tournament games for all sports throughout the academic year.  About 65 percent of the RHS student body participates in at least one interscholastic athletic activity, and each year the High School sends many students to play a variety of sports at the collegiate level.  A few FCIAC athletes have even medaled in the Olympics, the World Championships, and even played in the Professional Leagues, from Ridgefield:  Curt Onalfo (MLS) and Chris Winnes (NHL).
