Joyce Cohen, mother of Ridgefield resident and NY Mets broadcaster, Gary Cohen and mother-in-law of Lynn Cohen, has died

Joyce Cohen, mother of Ridgefield resident and NY Mets broadcaster, Gary Cohen and beloved mother-in-law of Lynn Cohen passed away peacefully on January 2, 2023.

Joyce was born in the Bronx, NY, the daughter of Rose and Jack Marin. She proudly graduated from Hunter High School and earned a B.A. at Hunter College, where she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

A talented artist, she sidelined her artistic ambitions when she married, and taught school in Northport, Long Island, before joining her then-husband in Germany, where her first child was born; she did graduate work in English at Queens College. A long-time supporter of progressive causes, she went on the 1963 March on Washington and cast her last vote for Hillary Clinton. Snarky, irascible, irreverent and erudite, she was an avid reader and did not suffer fools gladly.

She is survived by her three children, Debra Rae Cohen (Robert Brinkmeyer), Gary Cohen (Lynn Cohen) and Jane Ray, her grandchildren, Trevor, Kira, Helena, Jess (Kazz), Jaclyn ( Johanna), and Zach. Mary, Eliza, Emma, Augusta, and her great-grandchildren Amelia, William, Quin, and Nicholas. She is also mourned by her close buddy Leo Smeriglio, and Lauren Messina, her RVNAhealth Hospice nurse.

If you were lucky enough to have met her, you were lucky enough to hear her no-nonsense opinions on most everything. A fierce advocate for herself, you knew where you stood at every moment. She will be deeply missed.

Her life will be remembered by the family in private.
