Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Three questions with Marc Monte, founder of Montes Custom Works.

Why did you start your business?

It was a necessity after moving to the area. I moved to Ridgefield after losing everything to a natural disaster. I realized I could no longer stay in a flood zone and repeat the loss. I decided to use my physical talents to get a fresh start and break free from the stress of relying on working for others to support my family.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Anything custom built, difficult to do, replicate, or restore, mostly out of wood. I enjoy saving old things; working on old homes, and respectfully repairing and creating new ones. 

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

Hard to list cause it's nearly all. I use as many local businesses as I can. From Fairfield County Bank to Ridgefield (Ace) Hardware, I support many local businesses by purchasing items or donating philanthropically. Nonprofits I support include ACT of CT, Woodcock Nature Center, Ridgefield Library, Ridgefield Theater Barn, Keeler Tavern Museum, Ann's Place, and Aldrich Museum. I also volunteer my time by working with the Jesse Lee church Spirit Builders program, building handicap ramps for those in need, a few times a month.
