Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

Four questions with Jay Penn, one of the founders of Cavalry Lacrosse.

Why did you start your business?

Our coaching staff has been around lacrosse forever, at all levels of the game.  When we first "imagined," our business, it was around a fire pit, with some drinks and a lot of animated discussion about what works and what's broken in youth lacrosse.  We didn't know it at the time, but that was the start of the Cavalry Lacrosse Club.

What is your best-selling product/service?

I like to think of it more as joining a club or a brotherhood, more so than selling a product or service. We bring kids and coaches together who share a rabid passion for the game of lacrosse, we focus on developing their skills and having fun competing in highly competitive summer lacrosse tournaments. But, to answer the question, our best-selling product is our Cavalry Academy, which is our off-season training curriculum that focuses specifically on developing positionally-specific skills (offense, defense, goalie, etc) and lax IQ. The classes are available for all players, not only kids that play on our club teams.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We have used Tiger Sports for some apparel and other items.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Since the backyard fire I mentioned earlier, "reimagining" our business has not been a single moment, it's an ongoing process. We listen to the parents, we listen to the kids, we closely watch what is happening more broadly in youth sports/lacrosse and we make adjustments when there is an opportunity to improve.
