Why Small Businesses Matter
Shop small, do big things for your community
Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!
You're IT Alpha Fitness Girls Only!
Three questions with Mike McCartan, founder of Alpha Fitness Girls Only.
Why did you start your business?
We are two Ridgefield dads who spent hundreds of hours on the sidelines of our daughters' sporting events and realized our daughters (and their teammates) spend too much time focused on sport-specific skills and not enough time focused on strength and speed. As we looked into it, we concluded that the fantastic growth in girls' sports in the last 20-30 years has not been accompanied by appropriate strength and fitness training - which unfortunately shows up clearly in girl-specific injury statistics.
We started AFGO to provide girls with a way to learn the lifelong skill of strength training and to help girls maximize their on-field impact with strength and speed gains. There are better ways to train than "going for a run"!
What is your best-selling product/service?
AFGO runs girls' foundational fitness classes focused on strength, speed, mobility, and injury prevention. All of our classes are designed to be 100% self-paced, so that club/travel athletes can push themselves to strength and fitness gains, and girls focused on other interests can come to learn the life skill of fitness training.
How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
We have a fantastic partnership with Results Fitness in Ridgefield.
