A painting that tells a story: À Table, Bastille Day, and Charles Cobelle

Bastille Day is steeped in history, French cuisine, and art for À Table owners Bernard and Sarah Bouissou

On Saturday, July 13, 2024, from noon to 3 p.m., À Table and 109 Cheese and Wine are joining forces to celebrate Bastille Day with a special event featuring wine tasting, small bites, and the presence of winemaker Michele D’Aprix.

For Bernard and Sarah Bouissou, the owners of À Table, Bastille Day holds a deep personal significance. The grand opening of their French store took place on Bastille Day, July 14, 2023, which also happens to be their wedding anniversary.

A gift from Tina Sturges to Sarah and Bernard Bouissou: a painting by her father, the late Charles Cobelle

Bastille Day is further enriched by the legacy of celebrated late artist Charles Cobelle, whose birthday also falls on Bastille Day!

To commemorate À Table’s grand opening, local artist Tina Sturges, daughter of Cobelle, gifted Bernard and Sarah a whimsical piece of art painted by her father (shown here). The painting capturing a charming Parisian scene, hangs on the wall in À Table, serving as a daily reminder of Bastille Day and the deep meaning it holds!

The Monkey Room inside Bernard's restaurant is defined by Charles Cobelle

Charles Cobelle, a contemporary of Marc Chagall, spent a significant amount of time in Paris. His whimsical paintings have captivated art lovers worldwide. His connection to the Bouissou family deepened when he painted a stunning mural of monkeys in a private room at their former restaurant, Bernard's, which Sarah and Bernard Bouissou affectionately named the "Monkey Room."

Sarah Bouissou shares a personal anecdote: “I once bought a painting at an auction, not knowing it was painted by Charles Cobelle. Discovering this connection and our shared love for his work has been incredibly special. Tina Sturges' gift of her father’s painting for À Table's opening was a heartfelt gesture that means so much to us.”
