Ridgefield High School Music Department announces February Student of the Month

The Ridgefield High School music department is excited to announce high school senior Gregory Kapteina is February's music student of the month. His love of music both in and out of school has made him a valued section leader in jazz band, and an important member of the music community.

Gregory began to play trumpet as a fifth grader and fell in love with the world of music.

Entering high school, he continued to be devoted to learning and improving as a musician, in various aspects, such as music theory, practice with soloing, and overall talent. These developments in skill have led Gregory to become the trumpet section leader of Jazz band as a senior, being an awesome influence on his peers.

Additionally, Kapteina expressed how thrilled he is to be a member of Ridgefield High School’s music community. He reflects upon his favorite memories from playing music at Ridgefield High School as being the rehearsals with the pep band, which he has been a part of since freshman year. Kapteina says, “Despite the cold, playing at the football games was a lot of fun because I was contributing to the community as a whole”.

Band Conductor George Beratis says “Gregory has been an invaluable member of our music community for the past four years. He has a bright future ahead of him as a musician as he is a fantastic young trumpeter that is quickly developing fluency in both the classical and jazz idioms. As the trumpet section leader in jazz band, Gregory has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to teaching his instrument as well. He has improved his section into becoming one of the strongest trumpet sections I have taught in my career. We will sorely miss him when he graduates”!

Outside of playing in Ridgefield High School’s jazz band, Gregory is also the principal trumpet for the RHS Symphonic Orchestra and has been a part of the orchestra program throughout high school. He continues to focus on music outside of Ridgefield High School by playing in the Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra, where he is the principal trumpet, and also plays in the Norwalk Youth Symphony principal orchestra and concert orchestra, where he is also the principal trumpet. In addition, ever since middle school, Gregory has devoted himself to playing the trumpet by taking lessons under the guidance of private teacher Doug Myers.

Throughout his four years at Ridgefield High School, Gregory Kapteina has shown an incredible amount of devotion and love to Ridgefield High School’s music program, and Ridgefield High School’s community as a whole. As a talented and helpful member of the community, Kapteina will be greatly missed by both his teachers and peers when he graduates.
