Ridgefield Resident John Frey Appointed to Connecticut-Ireland Trade Commission

House Republican Leader Candelora Names John Frey to Connecticut-Ireland Trade Commission
House Republican Leader Vincent J. Candelora has appointed former State Representative John Frey of Ridgefield to the newly established Connecticut-Ireland Trade Commission.
“I’m pleased to name John Frey to this post as he demonstrated during his 11 terms in office a strong understanding of how to encourage and promote commerce in Connecticut,” Candelora stated.
Frey, who served 22 years in the House before retiring in 2021, brings with him a wealth of experience and personal connections. His ties to Ireland, both familial and business-related, will support his efforts in fostering economic opportunities and academic exchanges between Connecticut and Ireland.
The 23-member commission, approved by the legislature in its most recent session, will begin its work this fall. Frey’s term will run until September 31, 2027.
“I’m excited to take on this role and hope to develop effective strategies that will enhance economic activity and academic partnerships between Connecticut and Ireland,” said Frey.
Historical and Economic Ties
Ireland and Connecticut have a deep-rooted history of cultural and economic connections. With Connecticut boasting the 8th highest percentage of Irish ancestry in the U.S., the two regions share a similar population size (Ireland at 5.2 million and Connecticut at 3.6 million). Both are also recognized for their knowledge-driven economies, particularly in financial services, technology, and life sciences. Notably, more than 350 Connecticut-based companies maintain a presence in Ireland.
Frey’s Strong Irish Connections
Frey’s Irish heritage is significant. His grandparents were born in Ireland, and his family ran an Irish importing business for nearly 20 years. Frey continues to maintain familial connections in Ireland and is a frequent visitor. He is also a member of the American Irish State Legislators Caucus and previously served as the Ranking Member of the legislative Commerce Committee.
In addition to his new appointment, Frey has held various other governmental roles, including Chairman of the Connecticut Real Estate Commission and membership in both the President’s Committee on White House Fellows and the U.S. Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
