On Friday, February 16th, The Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the 1984 Olympic Podium at Glide at Brooklyn Bridge Park.
In attendance at this extraordinary event and fundraiser for cancer research was emcee, Scott Hamilton, with off-ice/on-ice skate appearances by 1984/1992 Olympic Medalist Brian Orser and 1984 Olympian Jozef Sabovcik, 1992 Olympian Paul Wylie, 2022 Olympic Gold Medalist Nathan Chen, 2006 Olympian Emily Hughes, 2022 Olympian and US National Champion Mariah Bell, 2014 Olympian Gracie Gold, 2014/2018 Olympian Kaitlyn Weaver, 2006 Olympian Emily Hughes, Ice Theatre of New York, Skating Club of Harlem, and top up-and-coming medalists… including local Ridgefield, CT resident, Ruby Weiner.
Recognized by US Figure Skating for her participation in the 2024 National Qualifying Series, Ruby is ranked Gold, in the top 25% nationwide. Currently Novice Freestyle Level, Ruby is also excelling in a secondary skate discipline: Ice Dance. Said Ruby, a 14-year-old high school freshman who has skated since she was four, “I love to skate, and truly love giving back to my community and those in need. Tonight was incredibly special. I wasn’t just skating with legends, I was in the company of really good humans who deeply care. We all worked beautifully together, doing what makes us most happy, to raise awareness, raise funds, and raise hope. We brought our best—and gave our best. You could feel the energy, spirit, and heart on the ice. I’m so honored and humbled to be part of this event, and involved in this kind, caring skate community that brings positive change—and hope to others.”
The event raised donations well over their anticipated goal to benefit and support cancer research. Every year, every day, countless individuals, and their families are touched by cancer.
