Westport Historical Society Offers Kayak Tour to Norwalk’s Chimon Island on Sept. 30

Join us for an additional kayak trip this year to Chimon Island, one mile off the coast of Norwalk, on Sunday, Sept. 30 from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. The tour will be led by David Park, board member of the Norwalk River Watershed Association and author of “Kayaking in and around the Norwalk Islands.” Participants will paddle out in a group and land on the island for a hike around the shore and a picnic. Enjoy the views from all around including an open meadow. David will discuss the island as well as the other Norwalk Islands.

The 59 acre Chimon Island is a protected island and is part of the Stewart B. McKinney Wildlife Refuge. Access is limited during the spring and summer nesting season except for a public beach on the west shore. For several weeks during the summer, US Fish and Wildlife island keepers camp on the island for continuing conservation efforts. The island has a colorful history including a resort hotel that operated during the early 1900′s but fell into disrepair and was the victim of a fire.

It is suggested to bring insect repellant and proper footwear for rocky shores and some high grass areas. You may also bring a light lunch or snack in a proper container.

Copies of “Kayaking in and around the Norwalk Islands” are available for $10 in our Gift Shop and at the Small Boat Shop in South Norwalk.

Fee is $20, $18 for WHS Members. To register, phone (203) 222-1424.
Meet and launch from the Small Boat Shop at Rex Marina, 144 Water St. in South Norwalk. Bring your own kayak, or to reserve a rental kayak, call (203) 854-5223 and mention this event.
